Overview

Replacing a power supply consists of:

  1. Verifying the current state of the power supply.
  2. Contacting Google Customer Support to get authorization for a replacement power supply.
  3. Replacing the power supply in the search appliance, processing unit, or storage unit with the new power supply from Google.
  4. Verifying that the new power supply works correctly.

Working with Power Supplies

Diagnose and replace a power supply from the rear of a search appliance, processing unit, or storage unit while the device is in its rack and running. The power supplies are hot-swappable. Exercise caution when working around powered devices to prevent injury to you or damage to the equipment.

You need at least 14 inches (36 centimeters) of free space behind a search appliance, processing unit, or storage unit to remove a power supply. If there is not enough space behind the device to remove the power supply, remove the attachment screws at the front of the rack so that the device can slide out far enough to remove the power supply. Remove the attachment screws using a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver.

A #2 Phillips-head screwdriver is also useful for removing the captive screws on the power supply of the GB-9009 storage unit. Otherwise, no other tools are required to replace a power supply.

The GB-9009 comes with a key for removing the front bezel panel from the search appliance--you can then use the LCD on the front of the GB-9009 processing unit to diagnose additional errors in the processing unit's power supply. The GB-7007 does not come with a key for the bezel and you need to rely solely on the power supply indicator lights at the rear of the search appliance to locate a failed power supply.

Important: If a power supply fails, leave it in the search appliance, processing unit, or storage unit until you are ready to install the new replacement power supply. You can optionally remove the power cord from the failed power supply.

Dispose of the failed power supply in accordance with the recycle or disposal policy for your organization, locality, state, or country government.

Verifying the Power Supply Status

You can verify the current status of the power supplies from the rear of the search appliance, processing unit, and storage unit. At the rear of the search appliance, processing unit, or storage unit there is an indicator light on each power supply that shows its operating status:

power supplies for the search appliance and storage unit

As shown in the illustration, the indicator light for the GB-7007 search appliance and GB-9009 processing unit is a single LED at the right of the power supply. The indicator light for the GB-9009 storage unit is the middle LED in a row of three LEDs.

If a power supply has an amber indicator light, the power supply has failed. If you see a power supply failure, contact Google Customer Support.

If the failed power supply is on the GB-9009 processing unit, you can open the front bezel and get additional information about the failure from the LCD on the front of the GB-9009 processing unit. For more information, see Verifying GB-9009 Processing Unit LCD Information.

This section consists of the following topics:

Verifying GB-9009 Processing Unit LCD Information

If the power supply failed in the GB-9009 processing unit, you can obtain additional information about the power supply failure from the LCD at the front of the processing unit. To access the LCD, you need to remove the bezel panel from the front of the processing unit.

Note: The LCD on the GB-9009 processing unit does not provide the status of the power supplies on the GB-9009 storage unit. For the storage unit, check the rear of the unit using the status indicator LED.

To open the bezel on the processing unit:

  1. Unlock the bezel with the key that came with your GB-9009 Google Search Appliance purchase.
  2. Swing the left end of the bezel away from the device to release the bezel.
  3. Set the bezel aside for later use.

The following table lists the error codes for the power supplies on the GB-9009 processing unit.

Error Code Description
E1610 Power Supply # (### W) missing. Check power supply. The specified power supply was removed or is missing from the system. Power supplies are numbered as 0 (left unit) and 1 (right unit).
