What is the PowerMeter API?

Welcome !! This site gives you an overview on how to integrate in-home/plug level energy monitoring devices with Google PowerMeter.

Google PowerMeter allows your customers to access their power consumption data through a secure, web-based iGoogle gadget. The data can be published immediately (low latency for the consumer) but is currently limited to uploads at 10 minute intervals.

Before a user can view their consumption data:

  • The user creates a personal Google account.
  • Devices monitoring energy consumption get activated and subsequently authorized to upload data to Google PowerMeter.
  • The user completes the short enrollment process, which automatically sets up their Google PowerMeter account and adds the Google PowerMeter gadget to their iGoogle page.
  • Activated devices then stream data to Google servers via the Google PowerMeter API. The iGoogle gadget then displays the customer's usage data.

If you are a utility provider or a device aggregator (you aggregate energy data from multiple devices) and are interested in integrating with Google PowerMeter for your customers, please refer to the necessary background and steps to take at Google PowerMeter for Providers companion documentation and resource site.

The PowerMeter API is still in the early stages of development, and it may change very quickly as we work to make it better, more powerful, and more efficient. So that you can continue to access the API in the future, we encourage you to build on a platform where you can quickly and easily update your client-side code. For more details, please read our Terms of Service.
