Note: The Google Desktop APIs have been officially deprecated as of September 14, 2011. The Google Desktop SDK is no longer available for download.

What are the Google Desktop APIs?

The Google Desktop APIs let you create gadgets and indexing plug-ins for Google Desktop. You can also integrate Google Desktop search into your own applications. There are two parts to the Google Desktop APIs:

Gadget API

Reach millions of users with powerful, cross-platform Desktop gadgets:
  • Create rich experiences with animation, sound, and visual transparency
  • Build one gadget for multiple locations — sidebar, desktop, iGoogle homepage, or Mac Dashboard
  • Provide useful information even when the computer is offline

If you're interested in creating other types of gadgets, check out the Gadgets page.

Search APIs

Use the power of Google Desktop search:
  • Extend Google Desktop to search more file types
  • Put Desktop search support into your apps or gadgets
  • Personalize gadgets based on the user's past behavior
